In the 1950's Longines purchased
the Wittnauer Watch Company and marketed a
variety of similar lines of watches in the US under both names. Founded by Ernest Francillon in 1866, the Longines Watch Company, situated in Les Longines near St. Imier, Switzerland, produced some of the finest timepieces.
In 1912 the company introduced
the first automatic timekeeping device. From that day forward, Longines-Wittnauer has been associated with time-keeping
at sporting events.
